The project
In the Condroz, a nineteenth-century stone barn becomes a ceramicist’s studio and home. The roof timbers stayed; north light now enters through the roof.

A 180-year-old roof frame, back in use
Every beam was surveyed, numbered and strengthened. The original tiles were relaid on a new insulated roof.
North light
A ceramicist needs even light all day long. North-facing roof lights illuminate the studio without ever dazzling; the house itself faces south.

Material and patience
Stone, lime, timber and fired clay: the materials of the place and those of the craft answer one another.
